Education Perfect, an Australian education technology company, needed to migrate its legacy platform, Version 1, to a modern, scalable Version 2 architecture. Orient Software provided two dedicated five-person teams to take ownership of the platform's core domains, modernizing its infrastructure, performance, features, and data integration, while running the new system alongside the legacy platform to keep migration disruption to a minimum.

A legacy platform that couldn't keep up with growth

Education Perfect is a leading learning, assessment, and analytics platform trusted by more than 50,000 teachers globally, used across curricula in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and international schools. Founded in 2007, Version 1 had served the business for close to two decades. But running a platform at that scale, across multiple countries and subjects, eventually reached a natural turning point, one where the system that got Education Perfect this far needed a new foundation to keep going.

A monolith reaching its limits

The legacy system's monolithic architecture made it difficult to scale, extend, and maintain, and its outdated technology stack and interface delivered a poor user experience, while overall system performance lagged behind what the business needed.

Growth outpacing the platform

The legacy system had slowed down development and could no longer keep pace with the business's rapid growth. Left unmodernized, it risked becoming a bottleneck that limited scale, new features, and how quickly the business could respond to change.

Compliance and process, non-negotiable

Any new platform had to meet Education Perfect's security compliance requirements for infrastructure, protect personally identifiable information, and work within the business's existing processes, on top of everything else needing to change.

What Education Perfect needed wasn't just extra hands. It needed a dedicated team with real expertise in the education domain, one that could take ownership of the platform's core business logic, and do it within a cost-effective delivery model. Orient answered that brief across three fronts: how the team itself was structured, how the platform's foundations were rebuilt, and how the migration was run without disrupting the business.

Split by domain, not by ticket

Two five-person teams formed, one taking ownership of Content Management, the platform’s core domain, the other taking ownership of the Report module, both operating in agile Scrum with two-week sprints.

Modernizing the architecture, piece by piece

The team re-engineered the legacy monolithic architecture to improve scalability, maintainability, and deployment, and optimized APIs, databases, and key workflows to improve speed, stability, and reliability across the platform.

Migrating without disrupting the business

The team rebuilt core education features for faster future delivery and a better user experience, while supporting data migration and connecting Version 2 to existing systems through APIs. The new platform ran alongside the legacy system, moving features and data across gradually.
